Brian Koch
FOUNDER, PRINCIPAL DESIGNER
“Our aim is to inspire joy throughout your entire landscaping journey and unveil the beauty of your final destination. We are dedicated to creating outdoor spaces that evoke a profound sense of love for where you live."
Brian Koch is a Licensed Landscape Architect and Landscape Contractor, and serves as President of TFLA. A Peninsula native, Brian attended Crystal Springs Uplands High School before earning a degree in Horticulture from the University of Vermont. He later returned to the Bay Area to complete an internship at the historic Filoli Estate in Woodside, where his passion for landscape design—and the early foundations of his future business—began to take shape.
Founded in 1994, Terra Ferma Landscapes started as a small, family-run operation based out of Brian’s parents’ home, famously supported by his mother’s station wagon. As the firm grew, Brian continued to expand his expertise, completing the University of California’s Landscape Architecture Certificate Program and earning his Landscape Architect licensure in 2009. This milestone marked the company’s evolution into a fully integrated design-build practice, meeting the growing demand for comprehensive, site-specific landscape services.
Today, Brian leads with a clear design vision and a hands-on approach. Closely involved in nearly every project, he ensures each landscape is cohesive, thoughtfully executed, and grounded in a deep understanding of site, client, and context. His leadership emphasizes creativity, craftsmanship, and long-term value—resulting in landscapes that feel both refined and enduring.
Brian lives in San Francisco with his family and serves as a Board of Trustees member for CuriOdyssey (formerly the Coyote Point Museum). He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA), Bay-Friendly Landscape Professionals (BFL), and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA).
